4. Finding your ‘why’ and setting goals
Take charge of your ‘why’
Let’s take a step back from the ‘how’ for a moment and focus on the ‘why’.
When it comes to making lasting changes, especially ones that impact your blood glucose control and metabolic health, it’s not just about having the right information. It’s about being emotionally connected to why you want to change.
This isn’t a quick list of goals. It’s about going deeper. Your ‘why’ should move you; maybe even make you cry. Because that emotional connection is what will keep you motivated on your journey.
Change can take time, and that’s okay. But as you go through this course, we invite you to ask yourself two powerful questions:
- How much better do I want to get?
- How much am I willing to change to get there?
You have an incredible opportunity to change your life and your future. The more committed you are, the more dramatic and lasting your improvements can be.
So take a moment now to reflect. Do you want to live free from blood glucose highs and lows? Avoid future complications like nerve damage or vision loss? Come off insulin or other diabetes medications?
Think about the moments you’d love to share with your kids and grandkids—and perhaps even your great-grandkids.
The science shows that change is possible. But it’s up to you to decide. How much better do you want to get?
Your ‘why’ is your fuel
Whether it’s your family, your future, or your freedom, hold on to your reason for doing this.
Write it down. Say it out loud. Share it with someone close to you.
Place your ‘why’ somewhere visible in at least three places—on the fridge, the bathroom mirror, or the back of the front door—so it reminds you every day what you’re working towards. Let it keep you focused on how far you’ve come and where you’re going.
Setting SMART goals for reversal
Once you know you ‘why’, the next step is to set goals that bring it to life.
SMART goals are:
- Specific – clear and focused
- Measurable – trackable progress
- Achievable – realistic for you
- Relevant – connected to your health
- Time-bound – has a timeline or check-in point
Examples of SMART goals focused on type 2 diabetes reversal include:
- “I will follow a whole food plant-based diet with no added oil for 12 weeks, then review my HbA1c results with my doctor to see if I can begin reducing medication.”
- “I will walk 30 minutes every day for the next 4 weeks to help lower my blood glucose after meals.”
- “I will transition completely off sugary drinks and refined carbs this month, replacing them with whole grains and fruit at least 5 days a week.”
You can adjust these to fit your personal journey. The key is this: If you want big changes, set goals that reflect a meaningful commitment.
Dose-responsive health choices
Your health outcomes are dose-responsive to your choices. In other words, the degree to which your health improves is directly related to how fully you adopt these changes.
If you’re aiming for life-changing results—such as reversing type 2 diabetes, reducing medications, and lowering your risk of complications—this requires significant, sustained shifts in diet and lifestyle.
Small or occasional changes can still be valuable. They may help slow the progression of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, but they’re unlikely to stop or reverse the disease on their own.
True reversal requires a comprehensive commitment to a low-fat, whole food plant-based dietary pattern, alongside other supportive lifestyle habits. The closer you align with these core principles, the greater the benefits you’re likely to see.
Small steps matter, but transformative outcomes require choices that match the scale of your goals.
A lifestyle disease, a lifestyle solution
Type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease. It is created and powerfully influenced by everyday choices around diet, physical activity, sleep, stress management, smoking, and alcohol.
If old habits return, the risks and conditions associated with those habits can return too. That’s why the goal isn’t short-term change, but building a sustainable lifestyle that supports lasting health.
