Activity: Laying the foundations

Activity: Defining your why and taking your first step

Step 1: Identify and write down your personal why

Before making any change, it’s important to understand why you want to make it. Your why is what will keep you motivated when things feel difficult or when old habits call you back. Research shows that writing down goals and reasons increases commitment and success.

Take a few minutes to reflect on why you’re interested in dipping your toes into whole food plant-based eating. It might be for health, energy, sustainability, ethics, digestion, fitness, weight management, or another reason unique to you.

Exercise
  1. Grab a notebook or open a digital document and write down:
    • The main reason you want to try plant-based eating.
    • Any secondary reasons that also feel important to you.
    • How you think this change could positively impact your life.
  2. Post this somewhere you’ll see it often (on your fridge, in a journal, in a phone note, etc.). This will remind you of your motivation when challenges arise.

Step 2: Create a simple tracking worksheet

Tracking your progress helps reinforce new habits and allows you to notice patterns that either help or hinder you. It doesn’t have to be complicated – just a simple way to reflect on how things are going.

Exercise

Create your worksheet. Your worksheet could include:

  • Date
  • What you tried (new food, meal, or swap)
  • How it went (taste, digestion, satisfaction, ease of prep, etc.)
  • Notes for next time (adjustments, what you liked/disliked, whether you’d keep it up, etc.)

In addition, spend a moment reflecting on how you’re feeling each day as you experiment with these changes. Consider tracking:

  • Energy levels throughout the day
  • Sleep quality (Did you wake up feeling rested?)
  • Digestion and bloating (Any noticeable improvements or discomfort?)
  • Mood and mental clarity (Feeling more focused? Any brain fog?)
  • Exercise performance and recovery (Any changes in stamina or strength?)

Even if you only jot down a sentence or two, this reflection will help you connect how your food choices impact how you feel. Over time, you may start to see patterns that reinforce your motivation.

Step 3: Pick one easy plant-based swap to try this week

Now that you’ve defined your motivation and set up a way to track progress, it’s time to take action! Choose one simple swap to experiment with this week.

Some easy options include:

  • Trying a plant-based milk instead of dairy (oat, soy, almond, cashew, etc.)
  • Swapping plant-based cheese into a dish you enjoy
  • Using lentils or mushrooms instead of beef or pork mince in a meal
  • Making a non-dairy smoothie
  • Trying a vegan yogurt for breakfast
Exercise
  1. Pick your swap and write it down.
  2. Plan a meal or drink where you’ll use it.
  3. Track your experience in your worksheet.

Remember, this isn’t about perfection – it’s about experimenting, finding what works for you, and making small, sustainable changes!
